Fight at Aventura Mall in Florida leaves ‘at least 3 injured and spark active shooter fears’ as customers hide in stores

A Brawl at a Florida mall on Saturday left three people hospitalized after shots were fired.  

The incident sparked fears of an active shooter with terrified customers fleeing the scene, but law enforcement told The Miami Herald the incident started as a fight between two people.

“We have 3 victims who have sustained non-life-threatening injuries and out being treated at local hospitals,” local police said on Twitter.

The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said that those injured were transferred to an area hospital and added that one of the patients is trauma alert, according to WSVN.

The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue didn’t give more details about the injuries.

Officials said they are treating other people at the scene. The extent of their injuries is unclear.

The Aventura Police are still handling the situation and closed down the mall until further notice, according to NBC.

Law-enforcement sources told Miami Herald that the incident was an altercation between two people, not an active shooter case.

The shooting reportedly took place inside an Nordstrom store inside the mall.

A law-enforcement source told the Miami Herald that three people had been reportedly shot. The police were looking for two suspects with one currently in custody, according to the Miami Herald.

The Aventura Police said its still handling the incident at the mall.

“All patrons and employees are being escorted off of the property. Access to the mall will not be allowed until further notice,” the Aventura Police said on Twitter.

The online footage shows people panicking and running to their cars, while checking to see if family and friend were with them as they fled.

Customers and employees were hiding in stores, closets, and storage rooms inside the mall amid the active shooting, according to Local 10 News.

Officers are still looking for the shooter and fire rescue workers were standing outside with plans to enter the mall when police say it is safe to do so, according to Local 10 News.

A video circulating on Twitter showed what looks like someone on the ground but it’s not clear if this person was hurt or hiding from the shooter.

Fox-affiliate TV Channel WSVN reported that shoppers are standing inside the store as one witness Tweeted “Literally locked in a store at Aventura Mall because there is an active shooter.”

Police are still investigating the incident.

One witness filmed a video showing people panicking inside the mall as they search for safety. The witness said on Twitter that he “dove for cover behind cabinets.”

“I was in the mall (my office is 5 mins away) when this shooting occurred a few stores over. Heard the shot, training kicked in – herded everyone, dove for cover behind cabinets. On the floor behind cover when I made this video. Pure chaos. Just left,” the witness said on Twitter.

People reported being locked inside the mall as the shooting was happening.

A witness told Local 10 News ran for safety when they heard the gunshots.
