Florida senate passes bill to ban abortions after 15-week pregnancy

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Senate Republicans voted on Thursday night to pass a ban on abortions after 15 weeks that already passed the House and Gov. Ron DeSantis supports.

During the public debate on Wednesday, Sen. Lauren Book, a survivor of child sex abuse, disclosed she was a teenage girl when she was the victim of group rape.

“It’s not OK to force someone who’s been sexually assaulted and impregnated to carry that pregnancy to term if they don’t want to,” Book said.

Democrats opposed the ban, which doesn’t have exemptions for rape or incest. It does have exceptions for health reasons and fetal abnormalities.

The state allows abortions up to 24 weeks.
