Florida reports 5,838 new coronavirus cases Wednesday, 52 more deaths from COVID-19

Florida’s health department confirmed an increase of 5,838 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday and 52 more resident deaths, with the statewide positivity rate at 7.82% from yesterday’s testing.

The state is now up to 858,012 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 17,300 resident deaths, according to the health department’s dashboard. Florida has also reported 212 non-resident deaths that occurred here, and 51,115 hospitalizations attributed to the novel coronavirus since the start of the outbreak.

Deaths confirmed in the past 24 hours in South Florida include three in Miami-Dade County, four in Broward County and two in Palm Beach County.

The state’s 14-day average positivity rate is 6.88%, and the 7-day average is 7.32%.

Also on Wednesday, the health department released a new report that shows more than 820 schools across South Florida have had COVID-19 cases over the past two months.

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber has gone so far as to suggest that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is pursuing herd immunity, allowing the virus to spread.

It’s also worth noting that the number of cases reported in the coming days could reflect several testing locations being closed temporarily because of Tropical Storm Eta.
