Bomb squad called to home of man accused of shooting at hospital in Coral Springs

FORT LAUDERDALE – A man who reportedly posted videos of himself randomly firing shots at different locations around Broward County was arrested after shooting at a hospital.

Police said 46-year-old Sami Qureshi fired four shots at a fourth-floor glass window of Broward Health Coral Springs around noon on Saturday.

Hospital security first thought it was just random damage, but then called the police.

“We met with security and after a little more of an inspection we found bullet fragments in the two layers of the windows,” said Coral Springs police Officer Chris Swinson.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in or around the hospital.

Hospital security dug a little further and offered investigators security video.

“Through our investigation, we were able to identify vehicles and identify a suspect later on that we were able to speak to about the damage,” said Swinson.

Qureshi was arrested on July 4th by Sunrise Police unrelated to the hospital incident. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and theft. He was later released from jail.

Coral Springs police tracked down Qureshi and, according to the department’s Twitter page, he confessed to the hospital shooting.

According to investigators he also admitted to going on other shooting sprees in Broward and posting them on social media.

“We are fortunate that the shootings that took place were in the woods, and into the windows that stopped these bullets,” said legal expert David Weinstein. “But there is no telling that if this had continued, where it might have led to… that’s why when people see something, they need to say something.”

Thursday evening, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrived to Qureshi’s home in Sunrise.

Bomb squad was on scene, but it’s unclear what investigators found.

Neighbors were told to evacuate their homes for several hours.

“It’s scary, I mean, two houses away from my house, it’s unbelievable,” said neighbor Cesar Reynoso.

Qureshi has been charged with one count of shooting into an occupied building and one count of introduction or removal of certain articles.

He’s being held on $200,000 bond.
