Bonita Springs woman wins $1 million in Florida Lottery scratch-off game

A woman in Bonita Springs won $1 million from a Florida Lottery scratch-off game.

Sheila Goins, 63, purchased her winning ticket from A Plus H, which is located at 27990 Tamiami Trail in Bonita Springs. She won the top prize from THE FASTEST ROAD TO $1,000,000 Scratch-Off game.

Goins chose to receive her winnings as a one-time, lump sum payment of $790,000.

The IRS requires the Florida Lottery to withhold 24% federal withholding tax from prizes greater than $5,000. The withholding applies if the winner is a citizen or a resident alien of the US with a social security number.

Overall, the federal government takes 37% of winnings, as an income of more than $518,400 places winners in the highest tax bracket. Winnings are taxable because the money is considered income by the government.

The retailer will receive a $2,000 bonus commission for selling the winning ticket, according to the Florida Lottery.

Scratch-Off games comprise approximately 75% of ticket sales and generate more than $1 billion for the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund (EETF) in fiscal year 2019-20, the Florida Lottery reported.
