Commissioners are considering urging companies to step up security in the South Beach area

MIAMI BEACH, Florida. – Nightclubs, bars and restaurants in South Beach’s entertainment district are again allowed to stay open and serve alcohol until 5 a.m. Earlier this month, a judge ruled that the last Miami Beach appeal at 2 a.m. for alcohol in any part of the district was illegal.

Commissioners will meet at City Hall on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of requiring security in bars in the area from midnight until after they close. This would add to the cost for the likes of David Wallack, the owner of Mangoes on Ocean Drive.

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber was a proponent of the 2am ban.

“I don’t think local residents should be trapped in a business model that just creates chaos,” Gelber said.

Before discussing the issue, commissioners voted for a $ 2.5 million grant to support the Sabrina Cohen Foundation’s efforts to improve wheelchair access on the beach and in the recreation center. The foundation had asked for $ 1.6 million.
