Florida man sets house fire killing him and his wife

A man set fire to his home Friday, killing him and his wife, police in St. Petersburg said.

Charles Nelson, 67, used an accelerant to start the fire, the Tampa Bay Times reported. His 75-year-old wife Janet Nelson called 911, but she was unable to escape the house.

Fire crews retrieved the couple from the home. Charles Nelson died at the house, and Janet Nelson died Sunday at the hospital where she was receiving treatment, police said.

The newspaper reported in the past that police had been called to the Nelsons’ home two previous times for domestic violence in 2014 and 2019. No arrests were made after either of those calls.

Pat Ditto, 76, who lives next door, had to evacuate from her home due to the fire. While her home wasn’t damaged from the flames, a large part of the fence between the two houses was destroyed.

“I heard a big boom and thought people were still shooting fireworks,” she said.

She said the Nelsons’ dog also died in the fire.
