MIAMI – A Publix supermarket in North Miami Beach was shut down and sealed off with yellow crime scene tape on Tuesday afternoon for more than 3 hours after authorities said a man was stabbed inside the store.
Police told CBS4’s Peter D’Oench that they were called to the Publix supermarket at 14641 Biscayne Boulevard around 12:30 p.m. after the victim was stabbed near the Deli.
They said the suspect fled the scene but was quickly captured and said the victim was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
It’s not known what prompted this attack and if it was random. Police said they were interrogating the suspect. They said he could face attempted murder charges.
Neither the suspect nor the victim has been identified. Police are studying surveillance tape from the store.
Publix customers say they are baffled and troubled by what happened.
“I heard someone got stabbed at Publix,” said customer Anika Cooke. “It is crazy and it is sad. Things are just now opening up. This is a great Public supermarket to come to. Everyone here is super nice. I hate to hear that something like this is happening. I hope he will be ok.”
Another customer named Jay said, “It is horrible. It is tragic. I hope the person will be ok. This is a Publix I come to all the time. It’s a neighborhood grocery store and shopping in a supermarket and get stabbed is ridiculous. People today need to relax and grow up. It’s not all about them. This is a Hispanic community. Everyone loves each other and there is no need for violence.”
