Regal Cinemas announces opening date with COVID-19 safety measures in movie theaters

Regal Cinemas says it will reopen its movie theaters in August after an extended closure during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company announced Monday it is reopening on Friday, Aug. 21. Its movie theaters will look and feel different with new health measures intended to prevent spread of the coronavirus.

Guests will be required to wear face masks in the lobby, hallways and restrooms but may remove them inside the auditorium while eating and drinking.

Capacity will be reduced to 50% where required by the state or county.

The reservation system will maintain two empty seats between groups or one seat in locations with recliners. At theaters where movie showings are not reserved, customers will be asked to leave two seats between individuals.

Safety measures include contactless payment for tickets and concessions, and sanitizing theaters after each showing with electronic “fogger” equipment, the company says.

“This form of deep sanitization is highly effective in disinfecting all materials with a non-toxic formula that is fast drying,” Regal says.

Employees will be required to wear masks, wash hands every 30 to 60 minutes depending on their job, and undergo daily health screenings, including temperature checks.

Cineworld Group, which owns Regal, initially planned to reopen on July 10 before pushing the date to July 31, Knoxville News Sentinel reported.

Regal operates 549 theaters in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories.
