Star QB recruit Jake Garcia decommits from USC, putting Hurricanes halfway to possibly flipping him

If the Miami Hurricanes are going to flip top quarterback recruiting target Jake Garcia, Thursday night’s developments may have put them halfway there.
The four-star signal caller from California, who played his high school senior season at Grayson High in Georgia, announced a decommitment from his longtime pledge to Southern Cal late Thursday nigh

“After many discussions with my family and careful consideration, I am decommitting from USC,” Garcia wrote in a social media post on his Twitter and Instagram pages. “Doing so will allow me to honestly evaluate my options as the early signing date quickly approaches.”
It’s no secret that Miami has been hot on the trail of the nation’s No. 5-rated pro-style passing prospect, by both Rivals and the 247 Sports composite rankings, in the 2021 class. UM appeared to be big on his list ahead of his junior season, even earning a pair of visits from him that spring and summer, but he opted to commit to USC in September of 2019.

The Trojans, last June, then added another four-star quarterback, Miller Moss, to their recruiting class. It rekindled the thought that Garcia could still end up with the Hurricanes. With Miami yet to land a quarterback in its star-studded 2021 recruiting class, it seemed like a natural fit, but Garcia remained committed to USC for months — until Thursday.

Shortly after Garcia’s announcement to reopen his recruitment, national recruiting analysts on 247 Sports began entering their “Crystal Ball” predictions that he ends up at Miami. Some others have predicted the move since before Thursday’s decommitment.
Garcia has fielded a significant push from the UM fan base on social media, urging him to join the Hurricanes over recent months. It has even extended to …
Following the Nov. 20 high school football playoff game between American Heritage and Miami Northwestern, Heritage safety James Williams, a five-star recruit, told the South Florida Sun Sentinel, “I’m getting after him. I’m going to try my hardest to get him. … I’m going to leave it up to God.”

Added Northwestern tight end Kahlil Brantley, a three-star Miami commit: “I’m still trying to get at Jake Garcia while he’s up there doing his thing at Grayson. Just going to keep working on him, see when push comes to shove when Signing Day gets here… I feel like we’re still in it.”
The first day of college football’s Early Signing Period is Dec. 16, so the move comes within two weeks of decision time for Garcia.
